J. Cole biedt excuses aan voor Kendrick Lamar diss: "That's the lamest thing I ever did"

Ruim twee weken geleden barstte de bom in hiphop. Future en Metro Boomin' brachten hun album We Don't Trust You uit en het bleek al snel dat ze op oorlogspad waren. Naast shots van Future naar o.a. Drake stond er een verrassingsbijdrage van Kendrick Lamar op het nummer Like That waarin hij uithaalde naar Drake en J. Cole.

Terwijl Drake zijn tijd besteedde aan captions op Instagram dook J. Cole de studio. Afgelopen vrijdag liet hij uit het niets een hele mixtape los, inclusief de disstrack 7 Minute Drill. Het was niet de reactie waar fans op hadden gewacht, want hij hield zich duidelijk in. Zo benadrukte hij meermaals dat Kendrick zijn vriend is en hij hem niet aan wil pakken.

Die lines kregen dit weekend op Dreamville Festival een vervolg. Tijdens zijn afsluitende show besloot Cole zijn excuses aan te bieden voor de disstrack. Verwijzend naar zijn Might Delete Later tape zei Cole: "I'm so proud of that project except for one part. There's one part of that sh*t that makes me feel like, 'Man, that's the lamest sh*t I ever did in my f*cking life.' And, I know this is not what a lot of people wanna hear. I can hear my n****s up there right now like, 'Nah, don't do that.' But, I gotta keep it 100 with y'all. I damn near had a relapse." 

Hij zei dat hij in conflict met zichzelf was, omdat hij niets voelde na de shots van Kendrick, maar wist dat wereld bloed wilde zien. "So I say all of that to say, in my spirit of trying to get this music out, I moved in a way that spiritually feels bad on me. I tried to jab my n***a back and I tried to keep it friendly. But at the end of the day, when I listen to it and when it comes out and I see the talk, that sh*t don't sit right with my spirit. That sh*t disrupts my f*cking peace. So I want I want to say tonight, in the midst of me doing that, and in that sh*t, trynna find a lil angle and downplay this n***a's f*cking catalog and his greatness..."

Uiteindelijk zocht hij hulp van het publiek in zijn steun voor Kendrick: "I wanna say right here tonight, how many people think Kendrick Lamar is one of the greatest muthaf*ckas to ever touch a microphone? Dreamville, y'all love Kendrick Lamar correct? As do I."
