Skepta keert terug uit zijn pensioen en kondigt nieuw album aan

Net als vele artiesten die hem voorgingen heeft Skepta besloten uit zijn vroegtijdige pensioen als rapper te stappen. Hij kondigt de release aan van een nieuw album aan en laat gelijk een preview horen van de eerste single.

Op Nieuwjaarsdag deelde de legendarische Britse artiest op Instagram mee dat zijn volgende studioalbum de titel "Knife and Fork" zal dragen, en de eerste single, genaamd "Gas Me Up," zal verschijnen voor het einde van de maand.

“It’s been years since I dropped my last album and I want to thank you for all the love during my hiatus,” aldus Skepta. “I’ve seen the messages, tweets and Tik Toks, I’m truly grateful that my music is still resonating with the world, even in my absence.”

Skepta kondigde in 2021 zijn afscheid aan van het rappen, na vijf studioalbums met als laatste het in 2019 uitgebrachte "Ignorance Is Bliss." Bij zijn afscheidsaankondiging bracht hij ook een vijf nummers tellende EP uit met de titel "All In" en beloofde dat dit zijn laatste zou zijn.

“ALL IN is all the music I have to give,” zei hij toen op Instagram. “I have no unreleased music, feels good to clear the outbox. Sure you all know, I’m a producer at heart and I have so many ideas that I want to work on with other artists. Upcoming and established, young and OG. Skepta on production. It’s that time. And I definitely want to make an all female album. So many fire female artists, rappers and singers. I gotta make a hard 13 track female only album FULL of classics.”

Hoewel hij niet meer rapte, bleef hij wel actief als DJ en produceerde hij housemuziek, waaronder een eerbetoon aan Amy Winehouse dat hij in de herfst uitbracht, genaamd "Can't Play Myself." Dit nummer bevat een herkenbare sample van het nummer "Tears Dry on Their Own" uit 2006, afkomstig van het album "Back To Black."
