Drake en Universal Music Group rechtszaak bereikt nieuw kookpunt: Canadees eist om contract van Kendrick Lamar in te kunnen zien

Drake heeft de eis neergelegd dat hij het contract van Kendrick Lamar wil in kunnen zien. Volgens Billboard is het verweer van Universal Music Group dat Drake onterecht vraagt om “uiterst gevoelige informatie” en dit gestopt moet worden. Ook heeft Drake informatie opgevraagd over het salaris van, John Janick, de directeur van Interscope Records, het UMG sublabel waar Kendrick Lamar onder valt.
Nu UMG heeft aangegeven niet te willen meewerken aan het openbaar maken van deze documenten heeft ook de advocaat van Drake gereageerd met een statement. “It is unsurprising that UMG is desperate to avoid discovery. This motion is a ploy to delay producing documents and communications that UMG hopes to keep hidden and buried. If UMG has nothing to hide, it should not have an issue with discovery.”

De rechter in de rechtszaak gaat binnenkort beslissen over welke informatie geopenbaard mag worden.
Eerder deze week heeft UMG ook al een verzoek ingediend om de Drake rechtszaak nietig te verklaren. “Plaintiff, one of the most successful rap artists of all time, lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated,” schreven de advocaten van UMG. “Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds. Plaintiff’s complaint is utterly without merit and should be dismissed with prejudice.”
Ook hierop reageerde de advocaat van Drake met een soortgelijk statement. “UMG wants to pretend that this is about a rap battle in order to distract its shareholders, artists and the public from a simple truth: a greedy company is finally being held responsible for profiting from dangerous misinformation that has already resulted in multiple acts of violence,” schreef de advocaat in het statement. “This motion is a desperate ploy by UMG to avoid accountability, but we have every confidence that this case will proceed and continue to uncover UMG’s long history of endangering and abusing its artists.”
Op 2 april zal het voortraject naar de rechtszaak van start gaan. Beide partijen zullen dan in de rechtbank moeten verschijnen.
