Oscar-winnaar Mahershala Ali was vroeger rapper

Mahershala Ali is bekend van de series House of Cards en Luke Cage. Dit jaar ging hij als eerste moslim naar huis met een Oscar voor Best Actor in a Supporting Role voor de film Moonlight. Voordat hij begon aan zijn acteercarrière, probeerde hij het eerst als rapper. Tijdens zijn rap-carrière ging hij door het leven onder de naam Prince Ali. In die tijd startte hij ook zijn eigen label, genaamd Eye5 Recordings, waar hij zijn album Corner Ensemble en Curb Side Service onder uitbrengt. Bekijk twee videoclips van Prince Ali hieronder.

Tijdens een gesprek met XXL vertelt Ali onder andere hoe hip-hop een invloed had op zijn leven:

"Hip-hop has definitely had a strong, perhaps the strongest influence on my life. I don’t think I’m at all unique with that. I think there’s so many people of color, and even white kids, that have been tolerating the stresses of their own problems and what not and were able to navigate so many things through the culture of hip-hop and create jobs, have opportunities and been able to express themselves and finding their identity in. I think that’s true with so many people, definitely with me. It’s an appendage. It’s a part of me.”
